A
rich and beautiful history
When
it comes to history a visitor to Kalkan has much to choose from.
The ancient Lycian city of Xanthos whose citizens would burn their
own city to the ground rather than surrender to invading troops;
Tlos with its ancient necropolis and the tomb of Bellerephon; the
religious sanctuary of the Letoon where the nymph Leto was worshipped;
and Pinara with its Royal Tombs and their uniquely detailed carvings.
There
are the ruins of an important Lycian port city at Patara where new
discoveries are still being made; the sunken city at Kekova devastated
by an earthquake centuries ago; and Arycanda where the pine-clad
mountains tower above the ancient theatre and wild herbs scent the
air.
A
slice of more recent history can be seen at Kaya Köyü
- the ghost village abandoned by Greeks during the repatriations
in 1922. Local relations here between Greeks and Turks were reportedly
very good with stories of Turks accompanying the Greeks to the harbour
at Fethiye to bid them farewell.
All
of these sights offer a fascinating insight into the past in breath-taking
surroundings.
